The winds of Change

As you might have noticed, I have been absent lately from this little blog I cherish so. 

Things have been very busy and to tell you the truth I have focused my energy on so many other things of late. Which, of course, has left me feeling unfulfilled and somewhat resentful of the day to day.

I happened upon this quote last week and it really put things into perspective: 

"Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least" - Goethe

The winds of change are on the horizon. I am readying my life for a new adventure and I have to keep these words in the fore front of my mind while doing so.

A Magical Night of Theatre

I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic evening of theatre this week at the incredible Winspear Opera House! This breath taking structure is the temporary home to the traveling cast of Billy Elliot: The Musical.  

My lovely parents and the mister joined me for the mid-week performance. It was a fun "double date" night to break up the monotony of the week. (And mid-week or matinee performances are always a little easier on the wallet)


I approached the show with an open mind since I wasn't really sure what to expect and I must say I was blown away. For starters, the production value was incredible. I have been lucky enough to take in a few shows on Broadway and compared the touring cast was fantastic. Billy Elliot: The Musical had astonishing depth and content far beyond the surface fun of the title. The leads and supporting ensemble dealt with real life political issues and struggles intertwined with the beauty of dance and song. 

I felt the masterful execution of the blend between the adult subject matter and the consistent childlike enthusiasm throughout the young cast members was extraordinary. (If you have seen the production, the best example is when the police/picketers are waring between the ballet class) Amazing!


My favorite scene above all the rest was the dreamlike ballet duet performed by the young Billy and his adult counterpart. I was almost to tears by the end of their dance. 


The show is only here a few more days, but the tour is nationwide! So check and see if it is coming your way anytime soon.

Sunny Weekend Ahead

I don't know about you, but I am itching to get this holiday weekend started!! The weather is going to be fantastically warm with nothing by blue skies on the horizon. The mister and I only have a few things on the schedule including a fantastic Saturday night with friends enjoying the spectacular Cowtown Hoedown. If you have never made it out, this is the weekend to join!! Be sure to find me and say hello. 


As for the actual Memorial Day, we have some pending lake plans that I have my fingers crossed will solidify! I could use a day full of vitamin D and breezy relaxation. Refinery 29 has the perfect weekend outfits for the occasion! This is my favorite!! I LOVE the vintage inspired cover up.

A bittersweet farewell

Today marks a very bittersweet farewell. One of my dearest friends, Kat, is biding adieu to her warm southern home and preparing to make a fresh start in oh so beautiful Denver.

I am so excited for her, but a little sad mixed with a hint of envy for me. I have a hard time allowing myself to become vulnerable and open. Because of this, I have a limited number of people of which I consider friends and now I am losing one to the north. I know it is a little silly and I am making it seem like the next great civil war, but I am already mourning the loss of our after work happy hours and girl time. 


In addition to loosing her, I am so envious of her impending journey. The thought of unknown adventures on the horizon is so exhilarating! I love change. I adore the movement and progression of all that I know. And now she is off to conquer new heights and I am still searching for the next step on my path. 


While I continue the search, I will be happy for my friend and empowered by her bold decision to make a change and take a chance on the possibilities ahead.

American Beauty

One of my very favorite American Girls is making her fashion debut in Berlin this month and I am bubbling with excitement to announce the opening of her new store!

She was an American Girl, a pop-up retail and gallery space, is the brainchild of American designer Tara Tonini. The store is home to twenty designers and artists.

What brought this American girl to Germany you might ask? Well rock and roll of course!! “The store concept sprung from a daydream while listening to the Tom Petty song, American Girl. I realized we are all looking for adventure, a challenge and a kick in the ass. She was as American Girl was conceived,” said Tara. 

Of course that statement just leads me to believe I need to start doing a whole lot more daydreaming and sewing! Some of Tonini’s other projects include her sweet as pie line Tara to the T and the retro perfect Sky Girls.

Flowers and Fairies

This Mother's Day I treated my mom and our family to a day out at the faire, Scarborough Faire to be exact! If you have never enjoyed the merriment of this wonderful festival you are missing out. It truly is like stepping in a time machine for an afternoon.

This renaissance wonderland has been a favorite of my family for years. We love watching the magical performers who seem to be on a stage in every direction you turn. The smell of honey roasted almonds and turkey legs fill the air! It is the perfect way to step out of the norm and have a day trip adventure.

At the faire everyone has their desired delight that they waited a long year for. The mister loves the steak on a stake. (I have to hear about that perfectly seasoned slab of meat for 364 days!) I adore all of the handmade products. This year I took home the sweetest smelling handmade lavender soap. Even my precious little nephew seemed to find his niche in the charming little petting zoo with baby pigs and chicks.

A Really Good Friday

My mister planned an extra special day for our Good Friday holiday this year. I told him early in the week that I just wanted to relax on my day off and did not want to do ANY planning for the weekend. I am the perpetual planner of most events and parties with friends and family. So sometimes I just want to take a vacation from planning vacations!! 

The mister succeeded in perfect style with a lovely holiday afternoon full of delight!! He surprised me with a trip to the Dallas Arboretum  complete with champagne and yummies. 

We had an incredible afternoon laying on our cozy blanket eating and sharing secrets. I felt transported to my own little garden filled with hidden nooks and countless flora.

Sunday Funday: Main St.

What could be better than enjoying the work of over 200 artists, numerous musical acts and countless art & crafts? Doing it all for free!! 

The 2011 Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival is "the Southwest's largest, four-day visual arts and entertainment festival, four days of fine art, food, fun and festivities!" The center of Sundance Square is home to the festival and all major streets shut down to make way for the thousands of visitors who attend during the four days.

  


The mister and I are always up for anything with art in the title so we made it out for the final day of the festivities. To sweeten the experience, I received some sky box tickets to enjoy the main stage and my giant turkey leg in seats out of the sun! We were just in time to hear the sounds of Me and My Monkey, a pretty decent Beatles cover band. 


After that we meandered through the endless sea of people and amazing creations. The weather was wonderful, except for the occasional crazy burst of wind, which made for a perfect Sunday afternoon. 


As we drove away from our funday it made me think, what other festivals can a girl like me look forward to in the months to come? So I did a little research and here are the ones that caught my eye. I would love for you to post any that you know of!! 


I know my style is a little newer than this, but I am obsessed!! (It is going on now!)

This would be totally worth the drive! A week of art in Austin??!!

A Night at the Museum

I am happy to say that me and the mister plus four did step out for our very own night at the museum and had an absolute blast!! The event was themed according to one of the museum's newest exhibits, Identity. Many patron's participated in everything from a grown-up arts and crafts room equipped with everything a person would need to create their very own one-of-a-kind masquerade mask to palm readers and hand writing analysis. The featured exhibit was a huge interactive space that encouraged attendees to engage in personality tests and stations where one can discover details about family genes!  


In addition to the special exhibit treats, the collection showcases and Lone Star Dinosaurs were available for visitors to enjoy. We marveled at the gigantic dino and the larger than life light bright! It was incredible to feel so small. 

We were lucky enough to partake in one last delight before calling it a night. The Fort Worth Astronomical Society  was participating in their monthly on site meeting and had their amazing telescopes set up for everyone to check out. I was able to snap this wonderful picture of the moon with one of their instruments. 

It was truly a special night of creativity and fun with people I love!! 

Sunday Funday: Austin

We concluded our weekend of adventure in Austin with a Sunday full of our favorite things.

We started the day with a trip to Kirby Lane, a yummy 24-hour cafe with $2 mimosas for brunch!! I had a delicious plate of french toast, while the mister enjoyed a summer special granola with tropical fruit. Let me say, if you are near this breakfast hot spot try the granola. It was amazing! After satisfying my mimosa craving, we took a little walk down the drag to Cream Vintage. This cool shop not only has a ton of great clothes, they have an in-store tailor to custom fit your purchase. I scored a super cute pair of much needed sunglasses and then we were on our way.

Our mid-day stop was to my mister's all time favorite coffee shop. Caffe Medici was the perfect place to stop and enjoy an opportunity to get my butt kicked in a friendly game of chess. (I am still a beginner, but I try!)

The evening began with a stop to the Trailer Park & Eatery. Torchy's Tacos to be exact. We enjoyed the unique taco creations before finishing the evening in true Austin style! Our last evening in Austin was spent crooning to some of the city's finest jazz at the Elephant Room. The underground venue was the perfect finale to the weekend of music and friends.

A day in the sun

We made our first official visit to the Round Up and let me say it was everything we thought it would be!! There were some amazing vendors, great bands and a seemingly endless amount of hot rods! I was lucky enough to score a few amazing vintage finds, which I will post a few pics of later, and spend a couple fantastic days with friends.

The mister and I shot mostly with the polaroid land camera and a bronica so those pics will be delayed for a few weeks until we can get them developed and scanned. But we did snap a few with our phone. So here is one for now!!

I am bubbling with anticipation and excitement about the weekend to come!! Me and the mister are packing up and heading south to AUSTIN!! It is only a few hours drive away, but this city moves at a completely different pace. The city is host to everyone from the crazy old hippies to the young hipsters and everything in between!

This weekend we are heading to the capital with a purpose; to attend an annual event called the Lonestar Round Up for the very first time.

For those of you who may not know, I am a lover of vintage fashion. 1950s fashion to be precise. I love the elegance, beauty and chic style that every woman seemed to have possessed during this time.

The Round Up is a celebration of this era. There will be three days of cars, clothes and music. If you can't make it, don't worry. I will be taking lots of pics and sharing them as we enjoy!!
